Generate AI Policy

1. Scope and Applicability
• This policy regulates the use of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the preparation of manuscripts submitted to IJIL. It applies only to the writing process and does not directly regulate the use of AI in data analysis, coding, or research insights, which must be reported transparently and remain subject to verification.

2. Permitted Uses
• Generative AI tools may be used only to enhance readability, grammar, or language clarity.
• These tools must always be used under human supervision, with authors carefully reviewing and editing the output.
• Authors retain full responsibility and accountability for the final content of their work.

3. Prohibited Uses
• AI and AI-assisted technologies may not be listed as authors or co-authors, since authorship requires intellectual responsibility that only humans can fulfil.
• Authors must not rely on AI to generate content that forms the intellectual core of the manuscript (arguments, interpretations, or original analysis).
• Authors must not upload confidential or sensitive data (e.g., interview transcripts, unpublished manuscripts, court documents) into AI tools that could compromise privacy or intellectual property.

4. Disclosure Requirement
Authors must disclose any use of generative AI tools in the writing process. This disclosure must appear as a separate section at the end of the manuscript, prior to the references.
Title of New Section: Declaration of Generative AI and AI-Assisted Technologies in the Writing Process
Statement Example:
During the preparation of this work, the author(s) utilised [NAME OF TOOL/SERVICE] for [REASON]. After utilising this tool or service, the author(s) conducted a comprehensive review and made necessary edits to the content, thereby taking full responsibility for the final version of the published article.
• This declaration is not required for the use of basic tools (grammar/spelling checkers, reference managers).
• If no generative AI tools were used, no statement is necessary.

5. Editorial and Review Process
• Reviewers and editors are prohibited from using generative AI or AI-assisted tools (e.g., ChatGPT) in the peer review or editorial decision-making process.
• In the future, IJIL may explore compliant AI tools to support the editorial workflow, but until then, the use of such tools remains restricted.

6. Ethical Standards and Consequences
• IJIL adheres to the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) guidelines.
• Failure to disclose the use or misuse of AI tools in violation of this policy will be considered a breach of publication ethics.
• Possible consequences include: 1) rejection of the manuscript during review, 2) retraction or correction of the article after publication, and 3) notification to the author’s institution if necessary.
